How to Do It

Place a mini-band just above the knees or around the ankles (harder).',. Stand in an athletic stance — knees slightly bent, hips loaded.',. Step laterally with the lead foot, then follow with the trail foot.',. Maintain constant tension on the band — feet never come together.',. Take 10-15 steps in one direction, then 10-15 back.',. Keep the torso upright — do not lean side to side.',.

ii.

Why It Works

The mini-band lateral walk is the most accessible glute med activation exercise available — no equipment needed beyond a $5 band. It builds the hip abductor endurance that stabilises the pelvis across an entire game's worth of skating strides. Research shows that 6 weeks of mini-band lateral walk training significantly reduces hip drop during single-leg tasks — directly translating to more powerful and efficient skating strides.

iii.

Hockey Transfer

Activates the glute medius — critical for lateral push and stability in skating. Daily activation drill, especially before skating or squatting. Free fix for chronic crossover weakness.

Coaching Cues

  • "Band above knees"
  • "Stay low in athletic stance"
  • "Step wide"
  • "Keep tension in band"
v.

Common Mistakes

Feet coming together — kills the tension. Always keep the band taut.',. Torso swaying — the movement is entirely in the hips. Torso stays quiet.',. Band around the knees when you're ready for ankles — ankles creates longer lever, more demand.',. Too wide steps — quality steps with constant tension beats wide sloppy ones.',.

vi.

Progression / Regression

Progression

Monster walk (band at ankles, forward diagonal steps) — adds hip flexor and abductor demand.',

Regression

Band above the knees with very light resistance — easiest starting point.',
