Mirror Drill
The Elite Hockey Drills app builds drills like this into your personalized off-ice program, week by week. Your first week is free.
How to Do It
Face a partner 2 meters apart. Both in athletic stance — low, on the balls of the feet. Partner moves side-to-side randomly. Your job: MIRROR them — same direction, same speed. Stay low. Don't cross your feet. Shuffle. 20-30 second rounds. Switch leader. Repeat. Progress: add forward/back movement. Add a ball drop or visual cue (raised hand) for direction change. Solo version: react to a phone-app cue (a Tabata timer with random beeps) or coin flip every 2 seconds.
Why It Works
Mirror drill trains REACTIVE agility — the cognitive-to-motor speed of responding to an unpredictable opponent. Where pre-planned agility drills (cone weaves, ladder patterns) train movement quality, mirror drills train the DECISION-and-execute pipeline that wins 1-on-1 battles. Reactive agility scores predict actual game performance far better than planned agility tests. For hockey players, this is the closest off-ice analogue to gap control on a defender or angling the puck carrier — you can't plan the route; you have to read and react.
Hockey Transfer
Reactive footwork — the EXACT skill of defending in 1-on-1 situations. You can't pre-plan it; you have to react. Trains the brain-to-feet path that separates great defenders from average ones. Defenders: this is your daily homework. Forwards: this is what beats defenders. Train both sides.
Coaching Cues
- "Face a partner (or imaginary opponent) about 2m apart. They move side to side"
- "Randomly. Your job: MIRROR them. Same direction"
- "Same speed. Stay low"
- "On the balls of your feet. Switch leader every 20-30 sec. Solo version: react to a coin flip or a phone timer beep."
Common Mistakes
Standing tall between reactions — defeats the purpose. Stay LOW and ready. Anticipating the partner's next move — they should be unpredictable. If they're predictable, the drill is broken. Crossing feet during the shuffle — slows the reverse direction. Always step then close, never cross. Doing too long rounds — quality dies past 30 seconds. Short rounds, full intent.
Progression / Regression
3D mirror — forward/back/lateral cues; tests omnidirectional reactivity.
Slow mirror — leader moves at 50% speed; lets the follower catch the pattern before adding speed.
