How to Do It

Standard rope length — handles at armpit height when you stand on the middle. Stand tall, elbows tucked, rope held loosely. Start jumping with both feet — small bounces, wrists do the spinning. Count consecutive jumps. When the rope catches your feet, stop. Write the number down. Goal: beat it next session. Progress: alternating-foot bounce, double-unders, criss-cross.

ii.

Why It Works

Max-consecutive jump rope tests foot speed, rhythm, cardiovascular capacity, and coordination simultaneously — four qualities that map cleanly to skating. Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid both train jump rope daily as part of off-ice prep specifically because of this multi-quality crossover. The score (consecutive jumps before missing) is a clean weekly benchmark: it goes up when foot speed improves, when cardio improves, and when CNS coordination improves — so it's a single number that tracks multiple adaptations.

Hockey Transfer

Foot speed + rhythm + cardio + coordination all in one. Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid both train jump rope as off-ice prep. Beat your record every session. Progress to double-unders once 200 consecutive is easy. That's the elite benchmark.

Coaching Cues

  • "Count consecutive jumps without missing. Standard bounce"
  • "Light feet"
  • "Wrists do the work — not the arms. Stand tall. Eyes forward. When you miss"
  • "That's your score. Try to beat it. Progress: alternating feet"
  • "Double-unders."

Common Mistakes

Big arm swings — wrists do all the rope work; arms stay still. Jumping too high — small 1-2 inch bounces are all you need; high jumps slow the rhythm. Looking down at the rope — eyes forward, posture tall. Feel the rope, don't watch it. Wearing the wrong shoes — flat soles only. Running shoes with heel cushion kill the rhythm.

Progression / Regression

Progression

Double-unders — rope passes under feet twice per jump. The benchmark progression.

Regression

No rope, just shadow-jump the same rhythm — builds the bounce pattern without coordination demand.
