Couch Stretch

How to Do It
Kneel facing away from a wall or couch. Place the top of one foot against the wall. The rear shin should be as vertical as possible against the wall. Bring the other foot forward into a lunge position — front knee at 90°. Sit tall and squeeze the glute of the back leg. Do NOT arch the lower back. Hold each side breathing steadily for the time prescribed on the workout card. Progress by making the rear leg more vertical over weeks.
Why It Works
The couch stretch is the most effective hip flexor and quad stretch available — targeting the rectus femoris and iliopsoas in a deep lengthened position. Chronically tight hip flexors from constant skating crouch anterior-tilt the pelvis, compressing the lumbar spine and reducing glute activation. 2 minutes per side daily restores hip extension range and immediately improves glute firing patterns.
Hockey Transfer
Most aggressive hip flexor stretch available — fights years of skating tightness. Pair with active glute squeezes during the hold. The glute fires, the flexor releases. That's the mechanism.
Coaching Cues
- "Rear shin against wall"
- "Front foot flat on floor"
- "Drive hips forward"
- "Stay tall"
Common Mistakes
Arching the lower back to get 'deeper' — this is cheating. Posterior pelvic tilt and squeeze the glute. Leaning the torso forward — you should be fully upright or even slightly leaning back. Cutting the hold short — give the tissue real time under tension to adapt. Only doing it pre-workout — pre AND post skate is ideal.
Progression / Regression
Elevate the front foot on a low box — increases the hip flexor stretch depth.
Kneeling hip flexor stretch (standard lunge) — same muscle, less range required.
