Calf Wall Stretch

How to Do It
Stand facing a wall, hands on the wall for support. Step one foot back ~60-80cm, heel flat on the floor. Bend the front knee while keeping the back leg straight and back heel DOWN. Lean toward the wall until you feel a strong stretch in the back calf. Hold for the time prescribed on the workout card. Then bend the back knee slightly to target the soleus. Switch legs. Both positions (straight and bent knee) are important.
Why It Works
Calf and Achilles tightness restricts ankle dorsiflexion — which restricts skating knee bend — which restricts stride power and edge control. It's a chain reaction. Tight calves are also a major contributor to Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis, both of which can sideline a player for weeks. Two minutes of calf stretching daily can prevent months of missed ice time.
Hockey Transfer
Releases calf tightness after sprints and plyometrics — protects the Achilles. Daily, especially in-season. Calves accumulate stiffness from skating; stretching prevents the lockout.
Coaching Cues
- "Hands on wall"
- "One foot back. Straight leg = gastrocnemius. Bent knee = soleus. Both matter."
Common Mistakes
Back heel lifting — invalidates the stretch. Heel stays on the floor. Only doing the straight-knee version — the bent-knee targets the soleus and Achilles directly. Holding for only 10 seconds — minimum 30 seconds for meaningful tissue change. Skipping it post-skate — this is when the Achilles is most vulnerable and most receptive.
Progression / Regression
Downward dog hold — full posterior chain stretch from calves through hamstrings.
Seated towel calf stretch (towel around foot, leg straight) — fully passive.
