How to Do It

Place a cone on the floor. Start 5m away. Sprint toward the cone at full speed. As you approach, lean the body INTO the turn — inside shoulder drops. Plant the outside foot and drive around the cone as tightly as possible. Accelerate hard out of the turn for 5-10m. Alternate direction of turn each rep.

ii.

Why It Works

Hockey tight turns are among the most technically demanding skating skills — requiring maximum edge pressure, hip rotation, and centripetal force absorption while maintaining top speed. Off-ice cone drill tight turns simulate the body lean, weight shift, and deceleration-reacceleration pattern that on-ice tight turns demand. Regular tight turn simulation measurably improves on-ice turn speed by reinforcing the lean-and-drive mechanics in the nervous system.

iii.

Hockey Transfer

Mimics the tight turn in corners — essential for puck battles below the dots. Practice both directions. Most players have a strong-side turn and a weak-side turn — work the weak one harder.

Coaching Cues

  • "Sprint to cone"
  • "Plant outside foot"
  • "Lean into turn"
  • "Come out of it accelerating"
v.

Common Mistakes

Wide arc around the cone — attack it. The tighter the arc, the better the transfer. Standing upright through the turn — lean into it. Low centre of gravity = faster turn. Not accelerating out of the turn — the exit acceleration is as important as the turn itself. Only turning one direction — always alternate left and right.

Progression / Regression

Progression

Add a second cone (S-turn) — string two tight turns together with an acceleration between.

Regression

Walk the turn at 50% speed — internalise the lean mechanics before adding speed.
