Slide Board — Crossover Simulation
The Elite Hockey Drills app builds drills like this into your personalized off-ice program, week by week. Your first week is free.
How to Do It
Set the slide board on a flat surface. Wear booties or smooth socks. Stand on one end in an athletic stance — knees slightly bent, hips loaded. Cross-step the LEAD foot over the other, planting on the far edge. Push HARD off the back foot's outside edge — same as a crossover. Glide across the board, keeping low, weight over mid-foot. Plant on the far side, decelerate, and reverse direction. Build to 30-45 seconds continuous for conditioning, or 6-8 reps each side for power.
Why It Works
The slide board crossover is the closest off-ice movement to actual skating — it trains the exact lateral push pattern of a crossover with proper edge mechanics. NHL development programs use this 3-4×/week in season because it maintains skating-specific neuromuscular patterns when ice time is limited. Reduces atrophy of the adductors/abductors that stride muscles.
Hockey Transfer
Directly trains the crossover pattern — improves cornering speed. Skating fluidity translates from this drill faster than from any other off-ice exercise. Earned by repetition.
Coaching Cues
- "Cross lead foot over"
- "Push off outside edge"
- "Drive across board"
- "Repeat"
Common Mistakes
Standing too tall — kills the edge engagement. Stay low like in your hockey stance. Pushing off the wrong edge — the OUTSIDE edge of the back skate is what propels you. Same here. Not crossing the foot fully over — short steps don't simulate a real crossover. Going too fast for form — slow down, get the mechanics right, then add speed.
Progression / Regression
Add a band around hips for resistance, OR use a longer slide board (8'+) for more force absorption demand.
Lateral mini-band walks first — builds glute med endurance before adding the slide board impact.
