Reactive Agility Drill

How to Do It
Set up cones in a T or Y pattern. Stand at the start. A partner or coach holds a coloured cone or ball — they will point or move to signal direction. On their signal, react and sprint to the indicated direction as fast as possible. The signal should come AFTER the athlete has started moving — forcing true reaction. Rest fully and repeat — vary signals so the pattern is never predictable. Track reaction time and direction accuracy.
Why It Works
Reactive agility (responding to a visual or auditory cue rather than a pre-planned movement) is fundamentally different from planned agility — it adds a cognitive component that mirrors actual game demands. Research consistently shows that reactive agility scores predict on-ice performance better than planned agility tests. Training reactive agility builds the decision-speed that allows a player to close gaps faster than the opponent can react.
Hockey Transfer
Trains reaction time and change-of-direction speed under pressure. Pre-planned drills train footwork. Reactive drills train decisions. Hockey is a decision sport. Train the decision.
Coaching Cues
- "Stay in low athletic stance"
- "React to visual cue"
- "Explosive first step"
Common Mistakes
Anticipating the signal — if you're always guessing right, the drill is too predictable. Slow response time — the gap between signal and first step is what's being trained. Only using visual cues — also practice auditory cues (voice commands) for game realism. Skipping rest — reactive agility is neuromuscular, not cardiovascular. Full recovery needed.
Progression / Regression
Add a secondary task (call out a number, catch a ball) to increase cognitive load.
Planned agility drills — build the physical patterns before adding the reaction component.
