Joint Circles — Full Body
The Elite Hockey Drills app builds drills like this into your personalized off-ice program, week by week. Your first week is free.
How to Do It
Start at the ankles: 10 circles each direction, each foot. Knees: 10 circles each direction with hands on knees. Hips: 10 large circles each direction — hands on hips. Shoulders: 10 arm circles forward and back. Wrists: 10 circles each direction. Neck: slow 5 circles each direction — NEVER fast neck circles.
Why It Works
Full-body joint circles systematically lubricate every major synovial joint with fresh synovial fluid — the joint's natural lubricant that is only distributed through movement. Cold synovial joints have less fluid coverage, move less smoothly, and are more vulnerable to impact injury. For hockey players who take hits, stop hard, and load joints in extreme positions, joint preparation is essential before every session.
Hockey Transfer
Circulates synovial fluid in joints — reduces post-game stiffness. Pair with dynamic stretching for full warm-up sequence. Joint prep first, muscle prep second.
Coaching Cues
- "Rotate each joint through full circle both directions — ankle"
- "Knee"
- "Hip"
- "Shoulder"
- "Wrist"
Common Mistakes
Rushing through it in 30 seconds — each joint needs 10 full circles. Take 2-3 minutes. Fast neck circles — the cervical spine needs slow, controlled movement only. Skipping it entirely — joint prep requires movement, not just static stretching. Only doing the joints that feel fine — the stiff joints need the circles most.
Progression / Regression
Add loaded circles (light dumbbell for shoulder circles) once basic range is established.
Passive range (use a hand to move the joint) if active circles are restricted.
