How to Do It

Two players compete one-on-one in a small-space game — trying to reach a target, win possession of a ball/object, or beat the other to a spot — using movement, reaction, and effort to win. Play short, intense rounds with rest between, switching opponents or roles. Compete hard and react to the opponent’s actions throughout.

ii.

Why It Works

One-on-one games train reactive movement, change of direction, and effort in a directly competitive context; the live opponent forces real-time reading and reacting, building open-skill agility and the competitive drive and conditioning of head-to-head battles.

iii.

Hockey Transfer

Mirrors the one-on-one battles of hockey — beating an opponent to a puck or spot, winning a race, or competing for position; trains the reaction, agility, and compete level used in the countless 1v1 situations of a game.

Coaching Cues

  • "Compete to win"
  • "react to your opponent, not the fake"
  • "stay low and ready"
v.

Common Mistakes

Low compete level; anticipating instead of reacting; standing tall; over-committing to fakes

vi.

Progression / Regression

Progression

more space, harder constraints, or add a puck

Regression
