How to Do It

Lie on your side, foam roller under the outer thigh just above the knee. Stack the legs or put the top foot on the floor for support. Roll slowly from just above the knee to just below the hip — 3-4cm per second. When you find a tender spot, PAUSE there for 5-10 seconds before moving on. Do NOT rush — slow rolling finds the adhesions that need attention. 2-3 passes per side is enough. More is not better.

ii.

Why It Works

IT band syndrome is one of the most common overuse injuries in hockey players — the constant lateral loading of skating compresses the IT band against the lateral femoral condyle. Foam rolling the lateral quad and TFL (the muscle that drives the IT band) reduces tissue density and improves blood flow before and after training. Note: the IT band itself can't be stretched — you're targeting the TFL and lateral quad.

Hockey Transfer

Prevents knee pain and IT band syndrome — very common in skaters. Tight IT band = nagging outside-knee pain. Skip this and pay for it in February.

Coaching Cues

  • "Side lying"
  • "Roller on outer thigh"
  • "Roll from hip to knee slowly"
v.

Common Mistakes

Rolling too fast — you're trying to find tender spots and release them, not massage quickly. Rolling directly over the knee joint — stop 2 inches above. Gritting through extreme pain — sharp pain means stop. Moderate discomfort is normal. Skipping it post-skate when the IT band is warm and most receptive.

Progression / Regression

Progression

Lacrosse ball on the TFL (hip pocket area) — more targeted pressure.

Regression

Roller with hands on floor for support — reduces pressure if too intense.
