How to Do It

Assume a faceoff stance: feet slightly wider than shoulder-width, knees bent, weight on the balls of the feet. Hold a stick (or simulate) in the faceoff grip. Partner or coach gives a random signal (voice, clap, or ball drop). The instant you see or hear the signal, explode forward — drive off the back foot. Sprint through 5-10 metres at full speed. Reset, vary the signal timing to train reaction, not anticipation.

ii.

Why It Works

The faceoff is one of the most explosive events in hockey — the winning centerman must react and drive forward in under 200ms. This drill trains the reactive start pattern: read the puck drop, explode off the back foot, and accelerate into position before the opponent. Research shows winning the faceoff in the offensive zone leads to a shot on goal 35% of the time — faceoff conditioning is directly tied to scoring.

iii.

Hockey Transfer

Trains the explosive start from faceoff stance — centers and wingers. If you're losing draws, this is part of the answer. Strength + speed + reaction time, all in one rep.

iv.

Coaching Cues

  • "Start in faceoff stance (crouched"
  • "Sticks on floor)"
  • "Explode forward on signal"
v.

Common Mistakes

Anticipating the signal instead of reacting — randomize the timing so it can't be predicted. Rising up before driving forward — stay low and drive horizontally. Weak back-foot push — the drive comes off the back foot aggressively. Only training one direction — practice winning the puck both to the forehand and backhand side.

Progression / Regression

Progression

Add a lateral shuffle after the start to simulate taking the puck to the wall.

Regression

Non-reactive faceoff start — self-initiated explosion without the reaction component.
