How to Do It

Stand sideways to the direction of travel. Going right? Left side faces forward. Step right foot to the right. Bring left foot to cross IN FRONT of right. Step right again. Bring left foot to cross BEHIND right. That's the rhythm: out, front-cross, out, back-cross — repeat. Hips rotate freely; arms swing freely; eyes look forward (not at feet). Go slowly first to nail the pattern. THEN gradually speed up.

ii.

Why It Works

Carioca trains the crossover-step pattern — the exact mechanics of hockey crossovers and tight-turn acceleration. Beyond the pattern itself, it builds hip rotation mobility under low-load conditions and develops the lateral fluidity that separates smooth skaters from choppy ones. Carioca ranks as a top general warm-up tool because it activates multiple planes of motion in a single drill: lateral, rotational, and sagittal all at once.

iii.

Hockey Transfer

The crossover-step pattern — exactly how you accelerate on the ice with crossovers. Builds hip rotation, coordination, and that hockey-specific lateral fluidity. If your crossovers feel awkward on the ice, your carioca needs work. Same wiring, off-ice version.

Coaching Cues

  • "Move sideways. Right foot crosses IN FRONT of left"
  • "Left steps out"
  • "Right crosses BEHIND"
  • "Left steps out. Stay low"
  • "Hips open and close"
  • "Arms swing freely. Go slow first — get the pattern"
  • "THEN speed up."

Common Mistakes

Looking at the feet — destroys posture and rhythm. Eyes forward, FEEL the pattern. Locked hips — kills the rotational component. Let them swing. Same cross-direction every time (always front, never back) — defeats the alternating pattern. Going too fast before mastering the pattern — bad reps reinforce bad movement.

Progression / Regression

Progression

Speed carioca — execute the same pattern at near-sprint pace. Tests true coordination.

Regression

Side-step shuffles (no crosses) — builds the lateral pattern before adding the rotational layer.
