Band External Rotation

How to Do It
Anchor a band at elbow height. Stand sideways to the anchor. Grip the band with the far hand. Tuck the elbow firmly against your side at 90°. Starting position: hand pointing toward the anchor (internally rotated). Rotate the hand AWAY from the anchor — externally rotating at the shoulder. Hold the fully-rotated position 2 seconds. Squeeze the back of the shoulder. Return slowly to start — 3 seconds. Elbow stays pinned to the side throughout.
Why It Works
External rotation weakness is the most common shoulder dysfunction in hockey players — years of internal rotation (stick handling, shooting, forward skating posture) create a dramatic imbalance. Weak external rotators are the primary cause of rotator cuff injuries and shoulder impingement. Two sets of band external rotation daily is the cheapest injury insurance a hockey player can buy.
Hockey Transfer
Rotator cuff prehab — prevents the shoulder injuries common from repeated shooting. External rotation work is non-negotiable for any throwing or pressing athlete. Hockey players push and stick-check — same demand.
Coaching Cues
- "Elbow at 90°"
- "Rotate arm out"
- "Pause at end range"
- "Return with control"
Common Mistakes
Elbow drifting away from the side — it must stay pinned. Use a towel under the arm if needed. Using momentum or a fast snap — slow and controlled only. Band too heavy — range of motion suffers. Use a light band with full ROM. Only doing it when the shoulder hurts — daily prevention is the entire point.
Progression / Regression
Side-lying dumbbell external rotation — heavier load, same movement.
Doorway stretch and isometric external rotation (push hand against a wall) before banding.
