Backcheck Simulation Sprint
The Elite Hockey Drills app builds drills like this into your personalized off-ice program, week by week. Your first week is free.
How to Do It
Start at one end of a 30-40m space. Simulate an offensive-zone position. On signal, sprint BACKWARDS 3-4 steps (mimic a defenseman's retreat), then pivot and sprint forward full speed. Drive arms hard, stay low through the first 5 strides. Sprint through the finish line — don't decelerate early. Walk back to start. Full recovery before next rep. Optional: add a lateral shuffle at the end to simulate getting in front of a trailer.
Why It Works
The backcheck sprint replicates the most physically demanding defensive action in hockey — a full-speed retreat from the offensive zone. It trains both max-speed running mechanics AND the mental discipline to sprint hard when already fatigued. Analytics show teams that win the backcheck race within 3 seconds of a turnover concede 60% fewer odd-man rush goals.
Hockey Transfer
Mimics the desperate backcheck — sprint 50m at full speed from offensive zone. Defenders: this is your bread and butter. Train the recovery sprint as hard as you train the offensive sprint.
Coaching Cues
- "Sprint full speed"
- "Transition to backward skating simulation at midpoint"
- "Sprint again"
Common Mistakes
Jogging instead of sprinting — this drill only works at 95-100% effort. Poor pivot mechanics — practice the turn separately until it's fluid. Stopping before the finish — commit through the line every rep. Too many reps without recovery — 6-8 quality sprints beat 15 sloppy ones.
Progression / Regression
Add a resistance band at the waist for the sprint phase — increases force production demand.
Straight 30m sprint first — nail pure sprint mechanics before adding the pivot.
