How to Do It

Sit on a chair or lie on your back. Lift one foot off the ground. Using only the ankle joint (not the whole leg), trace each letter of the alphabet in the air. Make the letters as large as possible — full range of motion. Go slowly and deliberately — feel the ankle working through each direction. Complete the full alphabet on one foot, then switch. If it's hard to trace distinct letters, reduce size and focus on control.

ii.

Why It Works

Ankle mobility and proprioception are critical for edge control on skates — the ankle is the primary feedback mechanism between your body and the blade. Tracing the alphabet forces the ankle through its complete range in all planes, rebuilding neuromuscular control after sprains and maintaining the fine motor coordination that makes tight-turn edge work possible.

iii.

Hockey Transfer

Full ankle joint mobility and stability — comprehensive ankle prehab. Pair with calf stretching for full ankle coverage. Cheap, daily, takes 3 minutes.

Coaching Cues

  • "Seated"
  • "Foot in air"
  • "Write the alphabet with your big toe"
  • "Both directions"

Common Mistakes

Moving the entire leg instead of just the ankle — isolate the ankle joint. Going too fast — this is motor control work, not cardio. Only doing it when injured — best done daily as injury prevention. Stopping at 'Z' and thinking you're done — both sides, every time.

Progression / Regression

Progression

Single-leg balance on a foam pad while tracing — adds proprioceptive challenge.

Regression

Seated ankle circles (4 directions) before progressing to full alphabet.
